Hot Water Has a Cool History! Did you know today’s super-efficient heat pump water heaters (HPWHs) trace their roots back to 18th-century experiments in ice-making? From William Cullen’s ice machine in 1748 to Robert C. Webber’s freezer mishap in 1945, to ENERGY STAR® certification and a 190,000-unit sales boom in 2023—HPWHs have come a long way. Dive into the unexpected, quirky, and revolutionary story of how a quest for cold led to one of the most sustainable hot water solutions ever made.
